Fears related to imported food are increasing
Twenty million chickens were ordered off the market Friday while U.S. inspectors check to see if they were fed an industrial chemical. Alabama and Mississippi have banned the sale of some Chinese catfish after tests showed the presence on two illegal antibiotics in their flesh. Inspectors are not keeping up with the skyrocketing of food imports. “The food safety system that we have is absolutely not working”, says Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce. In the past six months, from China alone, inspectors turned back apple chips with unsafe color additive, fresh ginger with pesticide, and dried mushrooms listed as filthy. China was not the biggest offender. Also refused were, from India, hundreds of items, such as spinach with pesticide, ground spice with salmonella, and crushed chilies with pesticides.
