Senate votes to block imported drungs
The Senate blocked a bid to allow U.S. consumers to buy their prescription drugs abroad Monday by requiring U.S. officials to certify the safety and effectiveness of such drugs, which health officials have said they can’t do. The Congressional Budget Office says that a 2004 study found that allowing presscription drug imports would cut U.S. drug spending by about 1 percent over 10 years. Similar drug import legislation is pending in the House.
